A Kiki silicone bumper absorbs knocks and hides scuffs on stainless steel bottles. Learn how to diagnose dents, when a bumper helps, and how to care for it.

Quick answer

Use a Kiki silicone bumper if your stainless steel bottle has started showing scuffs or small dents from drops. It adds a removable silicone layer that absorbs knocks and protects the base, but it won’t fix a bottle that is already leaking or badly dented.

What a bumper can and cannot do

A silicone bumper is a simple sleeve that fits around the base of a Pura Kiki bottle. It cushions the bottle when it is set down hard or tipped over, and it covers the bottom rim so scuffs and paint chips are less visible. Because it is removable, you can change colors or replace it if it stretches or tears.

A bumper is not a shockproof case. It won’t prevent every dent if a bottle is thrown against a hard floor, and it won’t repair a bottle that already leaks at a seam. If your bottle is leaking or the inner surface is damaged, stop using it and replace the bottle rather than relying on a bumper.

When a bumper is the right fix

If your baby is starting to hold the bottle alone or has begun dropping it from a highchair, a bumper is a low-cost way to reduce everyday wear. It is also useful if you want to personalize bottles for daycare or siblings without buying a new bottle.

The trade-off is that a bumper adds a little bulk to the base and must be removed for thorough cleaning. It also won’t protect the upper part of the bottle from falls onto a hard surface.

Diagnose your bottle’s drop damage

  • Symptom: small scuffs or paint chips on the base: This is normal wear from setting the bottle down. A Kiki silicone bumper covers the base and reduces further scuffing. Install it by stretching the bumper over the bottom of the bottle until it sits evenly. If the bottle is otherwise sound, a bumper is enough.
  • Symptom: a small dent but no leak: A shallow dent that does not affect the bottle’s ability to sit flat or seal is mostly cosmetic. A bumper can hide it and cushion future knocks. Check that the bottle still stands level and the lid or nipple collar fits properly. If the dent deepens or the bottle wobbles, stop using it.
  • Symptom: a leak, crack, or dent that affects the seal: A bumper cannot fix a leak or a crack. If you see water seeping from a seam, or if the bottle no longer sits flat, replace the bottle. Do not try to cover a leak with a bumper. Leaks and cracks mean it’s time for a new bottle, not a bumper.
  • Symptom: the bumper itself is stretched, torn, or lost: You can replace the bumper on its own. Choose a new Kiki Silicone Bumper in your preferred color and fit it over the base of your 5oz, 11oz, or 9oz insulated bottle. Remove and wash the bumper regularly with warm soapy water. Replace the bumper when it no longer stays in place.
